Generally
Lepidoptera are a large order of omnivorous insects. Butterflies are only one part of Lepidoptera but in some countries Lepidoptera are generally called butterflies. Lepidoptera get their name from the scales on their wings. Larvae (caterpillars) of lepidoptera can devour a product weighing up to several times their own weight in a week. They infest a multitude of types of stored products (e.g. species of the genus Ephestia sp infest flour, cereal grains, figs, raisins, tobacco, cocoa).
Moths are flying insects closely related to butterflies. They come in many different shapes and sizes. Unlike butterflies, moths have more earthy soft colors of brown, white, gray or black. Moth larvae look like hairy worms. Their body consists of the head, thorax and abdomen. A common type of moth that you can find in your home is the common clothes moth. It has a small body 6-8 mm long, and the larvae feed on fabrics and leave irregularly shaped holes.
